PATHOS

A Goodbye Unsaid

After the ceremony ended,
the last one everyone attended,
I stood, looking through the crowd.
All around the goodbyes were loud,
but I was looking for you,
sad because I knew
soon it all would stop,
straining to see over the top,
for a while I saw you, distant,
but it was only for an instant,
because then you were gone
and memories turned on--
in my eyes stood tears that wouldn't fall
but built up and burned as I had to recall:
seeing you and thinking how pretty you were;
meeting you and singing in happy wonder
for the rest of the day;
your "What can I say?"
sitting by you at the movie
aching with jealousy
yet ecstatic beyond mention

that you paid me any attention. . .
