WHITE DWARF 227

Last month the blockbuster Warhammer 40,000 hit the shelves
and wowed the public. To continue helping the transition
from 2nd edition Warhammer 40,000 to 3rd edition there will
be a special section giving the basic statistics for all
the Special Characters that have models currently available
for them. These will include extra 3rd edition rules as
well! People that bought the Warhammer 40,000 boxed game
will no doubt have seen the great new plastic Space Marine
Land Speeder. For those that need help there is an article
detailing how to put it together and then how to paint it
in the appropriate Chapter colors! From there we introduce
the new Space Marine Devastator models. Then there is a
huge article introducing the new Dark Eldar! Finally, there
is a monster battle-report pitting the Dark Eldar and the
valiant soldiers of the Imperial Guard. Players will get to
see the Dark Eldar in action as well as how the Imperial
Guard work under the new rules.

Empire players in Warhammer get another plastic Warhammer
Regiment, Empire Handgunners! There will be an article on
how to collect an Empire army using the Warhammer Regiments
and the slew of models that are at a player's disposal.
>From there we turn to the Dogs of War and the latest
releases for the mercenary armies that are popping up out
there. Plus, there are rules for the greatest Dogs of War
mercenary general ever - Borgio the Besieger. Undead
players will be happy to see a cool new Skeleton
army list based in the deserts of Khemri. This will be a
continuing article which will include a painted and
converted force. Bretonnian players will get hints on how
to use their Bretonnian army to its greatest potential from
Games Workshop staff Warhammer champion Alessio Cavatore.

There will be a three page article for Mordheim, City of
the Damned. These will be extra rules adding to those
published over the last few issues. Finally, for Gorkamorka
players there will be a four page article on bringing
Treacherous Conditions to the Gorkamorka game.

All this & more in White Dwarf 227!

NEW RELEASES FOR NOVEMBER

Warhammer Fantasy Battle Releases

Yet more Dogs of War, ready to be hire!  This month looks like it
will just about wrap up the releases for the Regiments of Renown
that are found in the Dogs of War army book. But it's not the end
of Dogs of War releases - look for more Mercenaries to come out
via White Dwarf magazine.  Keep an eye out for them to appear
in upcoming issues!

Ricco's Republican Guard is a resplendid pikeman unit, wearing
gold armor, gems and silk scarves.   But don't be mistaken by
the fancy dress - they offer any army that hires them a dead hard
unit of pikes, especially deadly to enemy cavalry charges!

Vespero's Vendetta is a mercenary band of assassins who prowl
the streets "removing" princes, merchants and other political
aspirants - for a price!  Their multiple attacks and ability to
skirmish make them great flanking and anti-war machine troops.
Like the Republican Guard, any Warhammer army can hire
them, and they offer a nasty surprise to unprepared enemy.

Al Muktar's Desert Dogs mark the first Dogs of War cavalry
Regiment of Renown available. These troops hail from the
blasted desert lands of Araby. Armed with scimitars and led by Al
Muktar himself, they make for a fast, formidable unit. The low
points cost of adding extra Desert Dogs to the unit means
players can field a formidable amount of this regiment (they cost
less points than most foot troops out there!).

Riding right behind them are our second Dogs of War cavalry
unit, Voland's Venators!  These mighty warriors are among the
finest in the old world, though their rough manners have lead
them to be banned from Bretonnia (an act that brought tears to
the eyes of many of the ladies there!).  With their stirring battle
cry of "Last One to Die's a Sissy!" they are probably the most
colorful of the Dogs of War!

Finally we have Borgio the Besieger, a famous Dogs of War
mercenary general and Special Character found in the Dogs of
War army book. This model is superb, and even if not used as
Borgio he will make a great mounted Empire or Chaos general.

Warhammer 40,000 Releases

BLOOD ANGELS
The fervor that the release of the new Warhammer 40,000 has
created shows no signs of stopping and this month's releases
will only help add fuel to the inferno!

Starting off, we have the new Codex: Blood Angels. This tome
details this deadly Space Marine Chapter and includes all the
new rules that set them apart from every other army (including
the new Death Company rules and new vehicles & units).
Supporting the Codex will be the release of the Death Company
boxed set. These new models are a must-have for any Blood
Angel player. The Death Company is a powerful unit within the
Blood Angels army, but its size is generated randomly before
each game now, to represent the power of the Red Thirst
overtaking the marine.  These models are a great mix of the new
plastic marine bits, new metal marines, and cool new metal
shoulder pads to create a multitude of possible poses.

The Space Marine Combat Squad boxed set contains five of the
great new plastic Space Marines, the same ones found in the
Warhammer 40,000 boxed game. Anyone wanting to build up
small units, or fill in other squads like Devastator squads will
find this set perfect. On the same token is the Space Marine Land
Speeder boxed set of the new model included in the Warhammer
40,000 boxed game. Great for forming up squadrons of these
fast deadly vehicles!

Some new Space Marine Scouts hit the new release shelves this
month. There are two main variants, one set with bolters and one
set with shotguns. Now that Space Marine Scouts come under
the Troops selection in the Space Marine army list, you can field
Scouts in great numbers, and their increased stats make them
better than ever. Finally, there is a new Space Marine Veteran
Sergeant with Power Axe, ready to lead any marine units to
victory!

DISCIPLES OF PAIN
Last month, everyone was introduced to the decidedly evil Dark
Eldar. This month a bunch of new models are available for folks
to expand their Kabals and wreak havoc on their opponent's
army on the fields of battle.

Surely the most popular model will be the Dark Eldar Lord. No
Kabal can rightly go to battle without their general at the
forefront! This is truly an impressive model, one that will make a
great centerpiece for any Dark Eldar army.

Protecting the Dark Eldar Lord in battle will be his trusted
bodyguard, the Incubi. These prestigious warriors wield a variety
of close combat and close ranged weaponry, all of which are
aimed at doing the most destruction possible!

One of the first independent characters to be released for the
Dark Eldar army is the Dark Eldar Haemonculus. In the game,
these characters can be equipped with a bunch of extremely
potent hand-to-hand weapons. Enemy generals will rightly fear
this miniature once it is placed on the battlefield as  Haemonculi
are great ways to kill that enemy general and everyone else in
the command squad!

To help bulk up the Dark Eldar Warrior squads (which should, in
turn, make up the bulk of any Dark Eldar army) players will be
able to pick up the Dark Eldar Sybarites. These models act as
veteran leaders and give a boost to the squad in both leadership
and close combat situations. In addition, there will be a blister
pack release of the Dark Eldar Warrior with Splinter Cannon.  As
they can lay down a withering amount of fire (four shots per
cannon!), these are sure to abound on the playing tables!

The most exciting release though will be the plastic boxed set of
the Dark Eldar Raider. This model is big and looks very cool on
the tabletop. Able to transport up to ten Dark Eldar into battle, it
can then stick around to deliver punishing blows with its Dark
Lance (a weapon that makes a mockery of tank armor and
personal  armor alike.). One is included in the Dark Eldar
Battleforce released in November, but now you can easily add
more to your force.

On the horizon for the Dark Eldar is the separate release of
Reaver Jetbikes, and new models like the Dark Eldar Scourges,
Warp Beast Packs, Special Characters, and more!

0203     Codex: Blood Angels     $9.99     (Army Book)
1518     Blood Angel Death Company     $17.50
(Boxed set of five metal models)

(Boxed set of one plastic model)
3009     Dark Eldar Raider     $24.99
(Boxed set of one plastic model)
3012     Space Marine Combat Squad     $12.50
(Boxed set of five plastic models)
8001B     Space Marine Sergeant w/ Power Axe     $4.99

WHITE DWARF 228 SNEAK PEEK!

This month's White Dwarf covers the unveiling of the infamous
Space Marine Chapter known as the Blood Angels. Players will
get a preview of the Codex: Blood Angels and all of their
crimson-filled history. This will include a look at their own variant
of the Predator tank, the Baal Predator. After reading about the
Blood Angels it's off to a huge battle report between the Blood
Angels and Saim-Hann Craftworld Eldar. From there we veer off
toward the darker side of things - Dark Eldar! In this White Dwarf,
Dark Eldar players get a peek at the Dark Eldar Raider and other
Dark Eldar releases. Then, Chaos players get a treat in a
Chapter Approved article by Andy Chambers. Andy gives out the
details for Chaos rewards and Marks of Chaos. These rules will
assuredly give Chaos players a new edge on the field!

Meanwhile, in the Warhammer world, David Cain offers up some
sage advice for getting the best out of flyers in your games. Of
course, there is the continuing Dogs of War releases which get
the spotlight along side the release of a fantastic new plastic
Siege Tower. There are a ton of conversion ideas, plus a bunch
of new metal bits are released that are perfect for modifying your
Warhammer Fortress or Siege Towers! Finally, for Warhammer
there is another colossal battle report, this one pitting David
Cain's Lizardmen force against Alessio Cavatore's Wood Elves.

There is a neat little article bringing treacherous conditions to
Gorkamorka. Our 'How to Paint' series continues along with the
introduction of our latest member of the Citadel Design team,
Chris Fitzpatrick. And that will wrap up White Dwarf issue #228!

Huck's Hopefully Helpful Hints:

I got one from my compatriot Joe Sleboda this month folks:

Smoke Launchers are a great way to protect vehicles on that
one turn when they really need help surviving.  The rules for
them say you have to place some cotton wool around the vehicle
to indicate the effect.  Well, I don't have cotton wool, but since
my wife is a quilter I do have quilt batting!  You can get batting at
Jo-Ann Fabrics or anywhere else that sells fabric and craft
supplies.

To make smoke launchers take a piece of sheet styrene and
place your tank <or Dreadnought - Tim> on it.  Take a pen and
draw an oval around the tank, leaving a 1/2" or so gap between
the tank and your oval.  Draw another oval around the first one
about 1/2" from the first one.  Cut the oval out along the two lines
you have made.  This should make a mutant doughnut shape.
Paint the oval Goblin Green, or whatever color you use for your
bases/table top.

Next, measure the circumference of the oval.  Cut a piece of
batting this long and about 1.5 - 2 times the height of the vehicle.
Glue this batting, on edge, along the circumference of the oval.
Super glue works well, but you might try PVA (Elmer's) glue.
Elmer's will work especially well if you intend to decorate the oval
shape with rubble/sand.

Once this batting is glued in place you should have a tall oval of
batting.  Pull and tear the batting into wisp like forms.  Arc the
edges together to form a dome of sorts.  You now have a handy
smoke launcher marker to place over the top of your vehicle that
will hold shape as you use it from game to game.

For extra effect, lightly mist the batting with grey primer in short
burst.  Be careful not to use too much - you are trying to add
depth to the smoke, not make it look like the tank is on fire!  To
stiffen the batting, spray a healthy dose of matt sealer.
