PATHOS
PATHOS
by Conrad Hubbard

The number of voices inside us
is the measure of our cowardice.
Truth is the meaning of bravery,
voices multiple, duplicity.
Speak one voice true, do not lie,
and for your truth you may die.
If only I could bare just one face
to all the world in every place,
but I cannot quiet the voices,
I've grown accustomed to their noises,
at least one face for every year,
and every face born of my fear
bears a thousand voices screaming out . . .
