I think that I saw you today
and that I heard you blow your horn at me
as you passed by on Cary Street
while I walked to my car outside my brother's house
I jogged out into the middle of the street
to make sure
my eyes searching far down the block
unable to be absolutely sure
that the red car speeding away from me
however much it might look like yours
was indeed the chariot of my goddess
So often I spot bright red vehicles from a distance
and feel my heartbeat speed
my blood race and my soul soar
all in anticipation of the briefest glimpse
of your face zipping by me
only to discover that my senses have been fooled
for a moment by my hopeful spirit.
