A Study of Demographics in the World of Darkness
Vampires
Vampire the Masquerade pretty clearly sets the general rule of thumb for creating a vampire demographic. The book states that vampires number about 1 per 100,000 people. That yields about 54,230 total kindred in the world as of the 1993 World Almanac's population figures. This is assuming that vampires of some sort exist in every culture. The rules book gives no real idea how one might devise a system whereby one could figure what portion of kindred belonged to various generations from Cain, however.

Whilst wrestling with this issue, which is of course merely a matter of the individual's storyteller's taste to answer, I decided upon my own answer. While it is not always an indicator of age, the generation of a vampire does often give one great insight into his probable venerability. The greatest attribute one can have in order to continue to exist for ages is the will to live. This is a fact that has been proven in studies of mortals who have lived over one hundred years. Thus I decided to use the Willpower chart as a model for breaking down the demographics of my kindred.

I am referring, of course, to the Willpower chart, used for the Fog in Wraith, or Delirium in Werewolf, which establishes the normal percentages of population with various Willpower attribute totals. I am in no way proclaiming that kindred have the normal willpower found in the normal mortal populace; I am only seeking to use the chart as a model for determining how likely various kindred are to continue to exist. To finalize the procedure, I simply matched a generation up to each willpower level and used the relevant percentage as a demographic.

This renders the following chart:

13th gen or worse 10%
12th generation 20%
11th generation 18%
10th generation 15%
9th generation 13%
8th generation 10%
7th generation 7%
6th generation 5%
5th generation 1.5%
4th gen or better 0.5%
 Werewolves
There are no clear guidelines for the population of werewolves such as those given in Vampire the Masquerade. However, it is often noted, and made clearly evident, that the Garou are a dying breed. As such it is only fitting that they be outnumbered by the supposedly overpopulated kindred. With this fact in mind, I chose the arbitrary rule of thumb of 1 per 500,000 people. This yields about 10,906 Garou worldwide, again based upon 1993 World Almanac figures.

Further consideration must now be given to the actual breakdown by tribe and breed. The only information we are given by the official source books is as follows: the Black Spirals are 10% of all garou, lupus are 13% of all garou, and the Stargazers are the smallest tribe thought to be less than 500 in number. It is stated that the Black Spirals are by vast majority metis and as metis are seen automatically as some sort of mark of the Wyrm, this seemed like a logical sort of mirror in nature. Thus I have arrived at the following suggested demographics:

Homid
Metis
Lupus
77%
10%
13%
8397
1091
1418
